DAY SIX - INSECTS

You might not realise, but lots of insects, especially the bigger bumblebees, and some butterflies and moths will fly on any mild winter day.

A saucer of water, or perhaps a shallow birdbath placed on the floor will do them a big favour.

Fill it to just a few millimetres, as they may drown if it is too deep.

You can also keep plants that flower in winter in your garden or windowbox; have a pile of logs and leaves; and resist the temptation to tidy and trim in your garden.

Many shrubs and hedges only flower on branches and twigs that have been left to grow for at least two years. Leaving your lawn unmown encourages wildflowers to grow - dandelions are a crucial early season nectar source.

Your action today is to use any or all of these tips to create a little plan to help bees through the winter months.
