Palm oil is found in many everyday food and cosmetic products. The oil palm trees it is made from grow rapidly and produce a higher yield than other crops like soya beans, making it an efficient vegetable oil to produce.
However, rapid expansion of oil palm plantations is contributing to deforestation in Sumatra, destroying vital habitat for orangutans and other wildlife.
We are therefore asking you to choose one brand from the shelves in your home and do the following:
• Check the ingredients. If palm oil is listed, is there anything on the packaging to indicate whether it is sustainably sourced?
• If you can’t tell whether the palm oil is sustainably sourced, or if the ingredients list just says ‘vegetable oil’, you can either contact the brand via social media or email to ask them to clarify whether they are using sustainable palm oil, or contact info@orangutans-sos.org for advice on how best to find out more about the palm oil in the product.
