CORNWALL’S TEMPERATE RAIN FORESTS. FROM CORNWALL WILDLIFE TRUST.

A personal appeal from Callum Deveney,
Head of Nature Recovery at Cornwall Wildlife Trust
This week we're launching an appeal to help kickstart an exciting new project:restoring a temperate rainforest in Cornwall.

Temperate rainforests appear largely in the western areas of the United Kingdom. Long ago in Cornwall – where we now have less woodland than the national average – they would have covered large areas, providing space for a rich variety of wildlife.

Can you help bring back this lost habitat? Your donation will help plant trees, create a home for threatened species, and bring back a magnificent ecosystem.

Cornwall Wildlife Trust manages West Muchlarnick Farm, near Looe: it’s a 150 acre site, with small pockets of temperate rainforest – and huge potential for much more! With your help, this area could be transformed into a magical and lush habitat, teeming with wildlife.

Please, help us create a thriving temperate rainforest for Cornwall’s future.

Restore a temperate rainforest in Cornwall
Did you know?

The trees in a temperature rainforest, like all trees found in woodlands, absorb carbon from the air and then store it in their roots, trunks, and branches. It is also held in the leaf mould and the soil. However, temperate rainforests can go a step further. Their spectacular ‘epiphytes’ – the lichens, mosses, and ferns covering the trees – are also likely to act as carbon stores in their own right. British rainforests could have real potential for storing carbon in our fight against climate change.

More about temperate rainforests

An ancient ecosystem

Covering less than 1% of the world, temperate rainforests are an ancient, primeval ecosystem that provides both beauty and a vital habitat for flora and fauna.
PROTECT THREATENED WILDLIFE

Rich in species

Distinguishable through the rich mossy environment, temperate rainforests are home to an array of wildlife including lichens, rare fungi, woodland birds, and mammals.

About West Muchlarnick Farm

In the early 2000s, West Muchlarnick Farm was left as a legacy to Cornwall Wildlife Trust with the wish that the land be used to benefit wildlife.

With 150 acres at the site and a small area already covered in temperate rainforest it is the ideal place to begin to restore the temperate rainforest habitat, which will enable a wide variety of wildlife to thrive. Our aim is to connect the land around this site through a combination of planting native trees, allowing for natural regeneration, and protecting native species to bring back this lost ecosystem.

By supporting this appeal, you will be providing invaluable support to the restoration of this habitat for decades to come.

Your donation will plant native trees, like sessile oak, rowan and hazel, provide fencing to protect new shoots, and fund important survey work to monitor impact on wildlife and carbon capture.
