ITS NOT NEW NEWS — WHAT WE LOSE THROUGH THE INSIDIOUS TERM ‘BYCATCH’

Hi John, In the time since I last reached out, something important has happened: our 2025 State of the World’s Bird report has been released. We share it every year to provide a comprehensive snapshot of global bird populations, which this year reveals alarming declines but also highlights where conservation can make the biggest difference. It is clear seabirds are one of the most threatened groups of birds on earth. We worked with Partners earlier in the year to release a paper that shows that in European waters alone, we’re losing nearly 200,000 seabirds yearly to bycatch – a term used when seabirds are killed by equipment used in fisheries. Our Keep Albatrosses off the Hook campaign shows that seabirds should not be dying this way. Human needs can be met without sacrificing the natural world. John, thank you for being with us on this journey to save birds around the world. Every action you have taken has made a difference. But I reach out today to say that while we are making strides together, the truth is, science and conservation needs more funding to reverse the trends. Your continued support can have the power to scale up our most urgent work. Will you help? £/$/€100 could equip vessels with the critical gear like bird scaring lines to prevent seabird deaths £/$/€50 could support a workshop for a fisher or a local community to empower them £/$/€25 keeps the mission flexible, so we can act the moment birds are in danger Together, we can turn the tide, but we need to act fast. We can’t do this without you. Donate today to keep albatrosses off the hook
