Wild Service in Action Workshop 12th September Makerfield Mass Trespass 13th September Local Group updates Dear Roamers, Summer is giving way to autumn and, as Parliament returns from recess, we’re ready to hold our politicians to their word. In his first Commons statement as Prime Minister this week, Andy Burnham promised to give “people and places ownership and control” while back in June at the People’s History Museum he pledged the “biggest rebalancing of power our country has seen”. Localism and access reform are both about giving people a meaningful stake in where they live - but what does local control really amount to when the majority of people are shut out of the countryside on their own doorsteps? That is why, on Sunday the 13th of September, we are taking our campaign to the Prime Minister’s own constituency of Makerfield with a mass trespass. Despite Makerfield containing great swathes of Green Belt countryside, just 1% of the constituency has a right to roam. The trespass location will be revealed nearer to the date. Join the us and friends of the campaign on Saturday 12th September for a one-day workshop created to encourage and connect the individuals and grassroots groups making real change for nature in their communities. Whether your Wild Service project is already putting down roots or it is only just beginning to stir, the day will offer practical tools, fresh inspiration and new connections to help it grow. The day will take place at Platt Fields Market Garden in Fallowfield, Manchester, a thriving community market garden and hub managed by the Manchester Urban Diggers (MUD). Alongside training and practical support from organisations including Wild Justice, Campaign for Commons and Lawyers for Nature, there will be plenty of time to meet others doing brilliant work for nature, explore the garden on a tour led by the MUD team and relax with some good food and live music Discover more about the workshop and book your free ticket here. Local Group Updates South Devon Right to Roam are planning a walk and a swim on the Marristow Estate where ‘no swimming’ signs have appeared, on the 27th September. Get in touch if you’d like to join. Representatives from the group will also be at the Green Earth Awakening festival next week - if you’re planning to be there, drop them a line and say hi! There will be a stall with information and workshops. Northamptonshire has a new group in the process of forming - their first meet up will be on Tuesday 29th September at The White Hart pub in Great Houghton, Northampton at 7.30pm.
