PLANTLIFE — THE GLOBAL VOICE FOR WILD PLANTS AND FUNGI

Plantlife Newsletter November 2024

Dear John,

For many of us November means lovely autumnal colours, cosy evenings in the warm and getting our wellies on for wet and wild walks in nature.

Which is why you might be wondering why we've chosen a picture of a beautiful flower-filled meadow. We have exciting news to share!

Thanks to your help on our Ryewater Farm Appeal, we have been able to expand one of our nature reserves!

We have now purchased an extra 4.45 acres of grassland and hedgerows, which will be transformed into a vibrant, thriving ecosystem and protected for the future!
Thank you for Protecting Nature
Ryewater Farm, a 38-acre nature reserve, is a haven for a diverse range of plants and fungi. It is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Area of Conservation and an important area of species-rich wildflower meadow.
“Meadows support more priority wildlife and species than any other habitat – they are essential to life", our Conservation Land Manager, Paul Rowland says. "Restoring this land to favourable condition will help us transform it to a species-rich ecosystem, protecting wild plant species."
Don't Forget the fungi! 🍄
It's the perfect time for some cosy creativity. Follow along with Plantlife's Rachel and learn how to paint a beautiful Fly Agaric Fungus with watercolour.
We couldn't write to you in autumn and not mention fungi! We love speaking up for fungi and hope you do too. So please support our Forgotten Fungi Appeal and take part in our annual Waxcap Watch campaign.
Also don't forget to head to our fungi page, or check out our social media below to find out more.
Species Focus: Sulphur Tuft
This little yellowy orange fungus grows in dense clusters on dead or dying wood, and can be found on deciduous or conifer trees between July and December. Did you know, Sulphur Tufts are bioluminescent and can glow in the dark! They don’t glow strongly, so the effect is best seen using a long camera exposure, or by shining  a UV light on the fruit bodies. Read more here.
