BANNING MP’s FROM HAVING SECOND JOBS (NOT ALL) FROM 38 DEGREES

Did you see this John? The Parliamentary watchdog has recommended banning MPs from advising private companies for extra cash. This change isn't about banning MPs from second jobs entirely - just ones where they could give private companies an unfair advantage when it comes to changing laws or winning contracts for public services like our NHS. [1]

This is massive - and it’s exactly what more than 73,000 of us have been fighting for, ever since Boris Johnson tried to get one of his own MPs off the hook for lobbying the Government on behalf of a private business. [2]

But the fight isn’t over yet. Whilst the watchdog - called the Parliamentary Committee on Standards - has recommended the change, it’s up to Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg to agree to the ban, and make it happen. That’s where we come in.

If thousands of us sign a petition urging them to accept the proposals - and finally stop MPs taking money from private companies in exchange for political advice - it’ll prove once and for all that we, the UK public, want our MPs to focus on doing what they’re elected to do: representing their constituents.

So John, will you call on Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg to accept the recommendations and ban MPs from advising private companies for extra cash? We’ve done so much to make this happen - and we’re so close!

It’s been quite the time for our democracy, John - and 38 Degrees supporters like yourself have been there every step of the way. First up, Boris Johnson tried to override the suspension of one of his MPs for lobbying on behalf of a private company. Cue a huge backlash - with 38 Degrees supporters right at the centre. The Prime Minister was forced to U-turn. [3]

Then attention turned to the fact that MPs are actually allowed to give political advice to private companies - just as long as they don’t actively lobby ministers on their behalf. [4] It doesn’t take a genius to see how messy that can get! MPs are elected to do one job - represent their constituents - not spend their time making extra cash on the side.

Again, 38 Degrees supporters dived into action. Tens of thousands of us came together to make it clear that we want these jobs banned for good. [5] Which is exactly what this influential group of MPs has now recommended. Now we need to make sure Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg accept the recommendations and implement the ban.

So John, can you sign the petition today calling on Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg to ban MPs taking second jobs as political consultants? Every extra name brings us closer to a ban!
YES, I DID
