View in browser Dear John, One billion plastic pellets – known as nurdles – have spilled from a cargo ship into the River Tyne [1]. It’s a race against time to limit the disaster. Thousands of volunteers, including our local action groups, are desperately trying to clean the beaches and reduce the impact on wildlife. But the official response has been far too slow, while every tide washes more into the sea, making it harder to clean up. Please tell the government to coordinate an emergency response. And hold companies accountable for every penny of environmental recovery. I'LL SIGN THE PETITION Nurdles stick around for decades and wreak havoc on sea life – fish, birds and other animals fatally mistake the bright plastic for food. We need urgent action to stop any more of these deadly plastic pellets escaping from the Tyne into the wider North Sea. The local volunteer response has been quick and inspiring. But communities shouldn't have to clean up corporate pollution. The government has promised to listen to the North. Local people have stepped up. Now it’s time for the government to do the same. Tell Andy Burnham to coordinate an emergency response and hold the companies accountable.
